writing and art beyond walls, beyond borders

ACT09 Laboratory of Ceramics
August 2013
Wortel prison, NL
artists: Anna Verrastro and Meryem Fresson

Anna Verrastro applies the traditional Raku technique. This ceramic technique has its roots in the ancient Japanese ceramic art.

Together with Anna a group of inmates from the prison of Wortel, Tilburg branch, made individual ceramic models and one large common piece (as a permanent installation in the prison).

Writer Meryem Fresson taught some haiku techniques as an icebreaker and as inspiration for the ceramic work.

The results of the haiku writings of the prisoners were implemented in the ceramic art pieces.

Haiku and raku share a common ground in the traditional Japanese culture. Word and image merge, as in the artistic form called 'Haiga'.
