To connect the arts, detention and society. This is the mission of the European cultural project PAROL! writing and art beyond walls, beyond borders.
Since 2013 inmates from fourteen prisons in Belgium, Greece, Italy, Poland and Serbia have been working together. With PAROL! they are participating in artistic activities facilitated by writers, visual and performing artists.
Various art disciplines will be on offer such as creative writing, haiku, slam, graphic poetry, video, photography, ceramics, mixed media, dance and theatre.
PAROL! stands for the right to culture and art in prison.
The "border" theme represents the common thread in the creative process with the inmates.
A number of draft art or artefacts will be collected in Art Boxes, which will travel to inmates in another country. Recipients of the Art Box will exchange artistic ideas and use the tryouts and artwork to create new words to images and images to word.
Ultimately, the results of this artistic dialogue will be sited in the prisons and in public spaces.
It is PAROL!'s ambition to make art in prison evolve into sustainable material cultural heritage.
The intra muros creation process and dissemination to co-inmates in 2013-2014 will lead to interim extra muros exhibitions in all partner countries during 2014.
PAROL! will present the results of its two-year European programme at the PAROL! EUROPEAN EXHIBITION in MUNTPUNT Brussels in March-April 2015.
